A Shropshire secondary school is asking for permission to create a new building with ten classrooms.
The Corbett School in Baschurch has applied to Shropshire Council for permission for the ‘L’ shaped building.
A planning statement prepared by Berrys states: “The proposed development comprises a single-storey school building, of 749.5sqm, of an L-shape plan. It adds that the building will feature “large areas of glazing”.It states: “The proposed building will provide 10 classrooms and a new library for the school, including associated storage rooms, offices and w/c’s. The building will replace existing temporary classroom cabins and provide an additional two classrooms. This will allow two complete faculties to be brought together within the new building and support a wider reorganisation of the school, so that classrooms serving the same subjects can be grouped more effectively.
“The proposed library will replace the school’s existing library elsewhere on the site, allowing that space to be repurposed to provide improved SEN support and facilities for after-school lessons. “The building will have a length of just over 50 metres along it’s eastern wing, and just over 30 metres along it’s southern wing. It’s maximum height would be 5.83 metres along the ridgeline of the library, with the lower height of 4.8 metres along the remaining roofs. The building will be constructed in fairly contemporary, but functional and sustainable materials. The walls will be clad with a dark grey profiled wall cladding and the roof clad in light grey steel cladding. The front elevations will feature large areas of glazing bringing significant amounts of light into the classrooms and library.”
Impact on Shropshire neighbours
The report adds that the visual impact of the building will be screened with vegetation. It states: “The proposal would introduce a significant new building close to Eyton Lane and visible to all passers-by, not just the users of the school. “The building has been designed with this in mind, to a high standard of design and layout, that makes a positive contribution to its surroundings.
“The building is single-storey and set within the southeast corner of the site where a level of significant vegetation is in place and will be retained to ensure the existing character of this boundary is not harmed.
“Views of the building will be available from Eyton Lane, particularly as passers-by travel from west to east.”
The Corbet School is a comprehensive mixed secondary school, with approximately 750 pupils.
The decision on the application will be taken at a later date.
