Oulton Academy, Leeds: Delight As Yorkshire Academy’s Rebuild Plans Are Approved

Oct 15, 2026 | Latest News, Rebuild

Hundreds of school children will be taught in modernised facilities after construction plans were backed by the council.

Oulton Academy is set for a re-building scheme which will create an upgraded secondary school for 1,350 pupils.

Sports pitches and a multi-use games area (MUGA) will also be provided after Leeds City Council gave planning permission.

The project, part of the Department for Education’s (DfE) School Rebuilding Programme, will eventually see existing buildings demolished at the Pennington Lane academy.

Building firm Willmott Dixon will carry out construction work to replace facilities dating back to the 1950s.

Update on Oulton Academy website

A September 30 update on the academy’s website said: “We’re delighted to share that planning permission has now been officially approved for our school rebuild, and the team from Willmott Dixon are on site.”

A design report said existing buildings at the school, part of Carlton Academy Trust, were in a poor state and not suitable for modern teaching.

The new facilities, set to be built in phases over the coming years, would expand pupil capacity from the current intake of 1,277, the report said.

The number of school staff would also increase, from 111 to around 150.

The report said: “The scheme will replace outdated buildings with a modern, consolidated campus, including new teaching blocks and a dedicated sports centre.

“The redevelopment will create a less sprawling and more efficient campus layout, providing improved facilities while increasing access to green spaces across the school grounds.”

An update sent to staff and parents said preparatory works were carried out by Willmott Dixon over the summer.

It said: “Due to the need to carefully sequence the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new facilities, the project will be delivered in multiple phases and is expected to continue for a number of years.”

Council planning officers recommended that the scheme was given approval.

Their report said: “Overall, it is considered that the proposed scheme is of an acceptable quality in design terms and delivers new and essential teaching and accommodation, as well as sporting facilities, which will also be made available to the wider community.”
